Mahr’s Christmas Bock
I don’t believe I’ve had anything from Bamberg, Germany’s Mahr’s Brau before. What better way to introduce myself to the brewery than with a tasty seasonal release? I cracked open this 6% ABV bock Christmas Eve while wrapping up some last minute gifts for the kid. It was the perfect choice for the occasion. According [...]

Beer Photo: Rochefort Fire
Reuters News of a fire at Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy, makers of the Rochefort series of Belgian beer, spread across the web yesterday afternoon. Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident and the Trappist brewers plan to recommence brewing in a couple of days.

Best Beers of 2010
In addition to the Year in Review I posted earlier, the below list is a little compilation (in no particular order) of some of my favorite brews from the past 12 months. Those beers marked with an “*” were complimentary samples received from the brewery or PR company. Terrapin Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout This turned [...]

The Barley Blog 2010 Year in Review
It’s that time again — the time of year when I dive head first into the deep, murky depths of the site and gather up some information that I’m no doubt the only one who truly cares about. Regardless, as per tradition, here is the 2010 Barley Blog year in review. At the time of [...]

Kasteel Cuvée Du Chateau
When I first spied this bottle of Kasteel Cuvée Du Chateau from Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck I assumed that it was just a rebrand of one of my favorite Belgian brews. It wasn’t until I poured this 11% ABV Belgian Strong Dark Ale into a tulip glass that I quickly became aware that it was not, [...]

Appalachian Brewing Mountain Lager
Lager is a style that I always seem to forget about when I go shopping and looking for something new. It’s a style that, once I crack a bottle open, I wish I had picked up more of. Amongst a couple of singles I picked up last week was this Dortmunder/Export style Lager from Appalachian [...]

Weyerbacher Tiny
Well the Christmas weekend has come and gone (all too quickly) and I have a back log of beer reviews that I’ve got to get posted. I’m going to try and squeeze as many as I can into the next few days, before 2011 is upon us. This Belgian inspired Imperial Stout from Weyerbacher Brewing [...]

Ommegang Adoration Ale
I love just about everything coming out of this Cooperstown, NY brewery. There are more than a few bottles from Ommegang sitting in my basement right now (Three Philosophers ages so well). When my father-in-law — he’s also a huge fan of the company — told me about this brew before Thanksgiving, I knew I [...]

Book Review: Flying Dog’s Dog Chow Cookbook
I’m a pretty big fan of most of the beer that Maryland based Flying Dog Brewery puts out. When I was given the opportunity to get a copy of their newly released cook book for review, I raised my hand like that spastic kid in grade school that just had to answer every question no [...]

Diamond Knot Brewing Industrial IPA
As you may have noticed with the latest round of reviews, I’ve been drinking a good amount of porters and stouts lately. The bitter, biting winds and shorter days of this time of year call for darker, thicker brews — and I’ve got more sitting in the basement just waiting for me. But it’s also [...]
