Westmalle Trappist Dubbel

I’ve been lucky enough over the years to have several of Westmalle’s Trippel. That beer is up there on my list of favorites. The Dubbel, however, I have never had and was anxious to try it after spotting a few bottles at a shop close to the office. It was a bit pricey, but I figured it should be worth it considering how much I have liked the Trippel.

Beer Label: Westmalle Trappist Dubbel

Aroma

The smell coming off the top of the glass was subtle, but there were earthy hints of nuttiness and some fruitiness. There was also a slight spice.

Appearance

This beer pours beautifully. It’s rich and dark caramel in color. The head wasn’t as thick as I expected — perhaps a bad pour on my part.

Taste

My initial impression was that it was quite bubbly on the tongue for as dark as it was. I figured it to be a bit smoother. It was a pleasant surprise. There is a hint of malty chocolate and coffees with a slightly sweet finish. I can see this one, with it’s lower alcohol (ABV 7.0%), being a nice session beer.

Overall

I really enjoyed this one. Had the few bottles I purchased not been so expensive, I’m fairly certain that they would have all disappeared in one sitting. I still prefer the Trippel, but I’m glad that I know a source for the Dubbel. Rating: 3.5/5
