RJ Rockers Buckwheat After Dark

RJ Rockers’ Buckwheat After Dark is another selection from the “wheat” themed mixed six pack I bought last week. This American Dark Wheat Ale — essentially a Dunkel Weizen without the banana and clove notes — comes in at a respectable 6.0% ABV.

I’ve only had one other RJ Rockers brew before and much like that Bell Ringer, this brew is pretty good, but ultimately sort of fades from memory pretty quickly.

Appearance

Reddish brown in color the beer poured with a decent sized tan head that held its form well.

Aroma

It doesn’t have a strong nose on it, but I did pick up a graininess, toasted malt, subtle dark fruits and light hop component.

Taste

Well, the flavor has a bit more impact than the nose with an active carbonation pushing the solid wheat presence and toasted malt around the palate. Unfortunately, however, it all fades rather quickly ending up with not much staying power. The result is a subdued beer that ends up being very easy to drink, but not as flavorful as I would like.

Overall

Buckwheat After Dark started off strong in the flavor arena, but ended up being rather forgettable in terms of its overall impact. On the plus side, it’s an easy drinking beer that would serve well tailgating before a football game. Beyond that, I’m glad I only grabbed a single bottle to sample.
