Dundee English-Style Ale

Dundee English-Style Ale

This 5.1% ABV English Pale Ale is the second bottle from the mixed seasonal pack that Dundee has released for this Fall. It’s also one of two new offerings from the brewery. Made with Columbus and and Cascade hops, as well as Zeus for bittering, the brew is an easy drinking, not-quite-sessionable little treat.

I can’t speak to the beer’s authenticity in terms of it’s “English-Style,” but I can say that the biscuity malt backbone that the beer delivers is well balanced with a moderately assertive hop presence. It’s not overly hoppy as many American interpretations of more traditional beer styles can often be, but it does have a nice little bite to it.

Appearance

Amber in color with a slowly falling white cap, the beer certainly looks tasty.

Aroma

Hints of lightly toasted bread, grain and subtle grassy hops all come together nicely.

Taste

A moderately hoppy character quickly overtakes a caramel and toasted bread malt backbone as the beer works its way over the palate to a clean finish. The crisp mouthfeel gives the beer a refreshing quality. To put it bluntly the beer tastes like your standard pale ale — well balanced and easy to drink.

Overall

This is one of those beers that would be great at a cool Autumn ball game or after raking a ton of leaves out of the back yard. It’s got a solid malt character with an elevated level of grassy hops and goes down easy. It’s not quite sessionable by definition, but pretty darn close — having a couple of these mid-afternoon won’t kill your day.
