Dundee Porter

Dundee Porter photo

When the mixed Seasonal sampler from Dundee arrived a couple of weeks ago, I automatically assumed that since this porter was included — and I’m a huge fan of the style — that this particular offering would end up my favorite of the bunch. Well, that assumption was quickly dispelled after enjoying the tasty IPA reviewed last week.

The porter, weighing in at 6.5% ABV, wound up my second favorite of the pack. It’s got a nice roasted malt base and late hop character in the finish, but it’s thinner-than-most mouthfeel left me wanting more. I’m not sure that it would be a strong competitor to many of my favorite porters on its own, but when delivered in a variety pack like this the porter has more to offer.

Appearance

Pouring a dark, dark brown the porter sits with a creamy, light tan head.

Aroma

The porter smells good with a solid roast malt presence, faint char and hints of caramel and chocolate.

Taste

Just like the nose, a nicely roasted malt character starts off the flavors as hints of coffee and chocolate arrive midway through before finishing dry with a moderate hop bitterness. The beer’s mouthfeel is a little on the thin side for my personal preference, but that didn’t affect its easy drinking nature. The 6.5% ABV was well masked.

Overall

This porter is the perfect accompaniment to a mixed seasonal pack. I don’t believe that it’s strong enough to stand out on its own, but when combined with the variety that Dundee is offering in this pack it stands out that much more. All in all, I enjoyed the Fall mixed pack. It had a little bit of everything that was suitable for these colder months.
