Scuttlebutt Amber Ale

Scuttlebutt Brewing Logo

I picked up Scuttlebutt’s “most popular” brew a couple of weeks ago along with a bottle of their 10° Below Ale. After drinking this brew, it’s easy to see why they consider it their best seller.

While this amber ale may not blow your socks off, it’s an easy drinking beer with enough flavor to keep it from getting lost in the crowd. There’s a solid balance between biscuity malts and citrus hops that keeps the beer even keeled and right down the middle within the style. At 5.1% ABV, it’s one of those beers that you can put away quite easily during a ball game, as well.

Appearance

The beer pours a bright amber in color with a dense, off-white head.

Aroma

Solid biscuity malts and light floral hops mix nicely within the nose. It’s not an overpowering brew, but certainly isn’t lacking in the aroma department either.

Taste

This medium bodied brew has a nice blend of caramel malt, a light toast, slight hop tartness and a light sweetness. It’s a well balanced and clean brew that goes down easy and refreshes nicely. The malt presence is much stronger on the palate than it was in the aroma. Everything all but disappears in the finish which doesn’t really offer much outside of a subtle hop bitterness.

Overall

I actually really enjoyed this beer and can see myself putting a few of these away at a neighborhood cookout this Summer. It’s easy to drink and has a decent, balanced flavor. I can see why they consider it their most popular. It’s a clean, crisp and smooth drinking little brew. I’ll be sure to pick some up as the weather warms toward Spring.
