Whisky In A Can?

Scottish Spirits whisky in a can

I wanted to post this little tidbit earlier in the week, but I’ve been slammed with work and unfortunately haven’t been able to spend much time on the blog at all the past couple of days.

At any rate, first there was the move of craft beer to the convenient can and now this. A Panama-based company (Scottish Spirits) is now offering one of their products in a can. Big deal you say? Well, it ain’t beer. We’re talking whisky. In a can.

I’m sure most of us remember the initial fright/uproar when quality craft beer was introduced in non-glass bottle format. It was a strange time that has obviously proven that you can pack a tasty brew into a can. I love Oskar Blues Ten Fiddy and 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die IPA, among others. I also do like a fine scotch — I could go for some Laphroaig right about now, despite the fact that the sun isn’t up yet — but I’m not sure I could get used to the sound of an aluminum can snapping open before pouring a “whisky” into a snifter. That just seems weird to me.

The beverage is currently only available in the Caribean and South America, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before it’s spotted in the U.S.

So is this just like the canned craft beer movement, or nothing more than a marketing gimmick?
