Magic Hat Hocus Pocus

This bottle of Magic Hat Hocus Pocus is the last of a trio of samples that I received from the brewery a couple of weeks ago. It’s a 4.5% ABV American Pale Wheat Ale that, while refreshing, comes across rather lackluster. At least, after having had the rich and malty Hex, as well as the piny Hi.P.A., this last brew just didn’t stand up flavor-wise.

Now, that’s not to say this is a horrible beer — it’s not. It fits the style guidelines well, but when my palate has been spoiled by the brewery’s other tasty treats, this one just couldn’t hang with them. This is the type of beer that I would expect to find piled in a cooler at any backyard cookout or at the beach.

Appearance

The beer pours a clear golden straw in color with a persistent white crown.

Aroma

The nose on the beer is pretty good as hints of grapefruit, a light pine, floral hops, light spcies and a subtle wheat presence mingle together nicely.

Taste

There’s more of a malt presence within the taste of Hocus Pocus than the nose let on, but it’s still rather subdued. Cereal and grain arrive first as a light citrus hop character lingers in the background. The medium bodied beer has a mild wheat character. The crisp carbonation and light flavors give the beer a refreshing quality.

Overall

I found Hocus Pocus to be a little lacking in flavor. It’s a relatively light beer (in terms of flavor profile) that I am sure would hit the spot after working outside on a hot day, but when compared to Magic Hat’s other products, it just doesn’t stack up to some of their richer and tastier brews.
