DuClaw Brewing Neon Gypsy

DuClaw Brewing’s Neon Gypsy is a 6.5% ABV and 75 IBU IPA that’s brewed with seven hop varieties — Columbus, Simcoe, Chinook, Amarillo, Citra, Nelson Sauvin, and Sorachi Ace. Suffice it to say, the beer packs a wonderfully hoppy flavor.

I spent one night back in mid-May enjoying a string of IPAs and by the time I got around to reviewing this particular brew in the line-up and I was worried that my palate was over-saturated. A quick sniff of golden liquid and then a sip let me know immediately that this beer wasn’t going to let my taste buds quit on it. It’s a big, bold IPA with tons of orange citrusy flavor and a solid pungency.

Appearance

Neon Gypsy pours a golden amber in color with a frothy head of off-white foam that left behind intricate lace work as it dropped, seen below.

Aroma

Fresh cut grass, pine, grapefruit, orange zest and a pretty strong catty character fill the nose briskly with hints of lightly toasted malt in the background.

Taste

A solid amount of grapefruit, orange zest and pine lead the way as the beer flows smoothly over the tongue. Grass and that light catty character quickly follow. Hints of grain linger in the background as the hop profile dominates with a solid pungency. For 75 IBU, the beer isn’t overly biting, but does let you know that there’s a pile of hops in each bottle. There’s a soft sweetness that lingers gently in the finish.

Overall

Even after a couple of IPAs previous to cracking this bottle open, Neon Gypsy packs a pungent hop character. I’ll be sure to pick up more of this one in the future — and perhaps even enjoy it first in the next IPA line-up that I tackle.
