Abita Wrought Iron IPA

I’ve had many good Abita brews throughout the years, but, unfortunately, Wrought Iron isn’t quite up to par with those products. The 6.9% ABV IPA isn’t bad by any means. This is a case of the flavor not living up to an aroma that is just about out of this world — the blend of Apollo, Mosaic and Equinox hop varieties is enticing as hell.

But then you take a sip. And the flavors are muted, not nearly as fruity or traditionally “hoppy.” Instead a strong cattiness creeps in that just doesn’t quite work for me as the IPA leavse behind a moderate level of bitterness before fading away without a trace.

Appearance

A massive stack of off-white foam rose quickly during the gentle pour. It did leave behind an impressive spiderweb of lace as it dropped atop the golden brew.

Aroma

Grapefruit, lemon zest, pine resin, soft toast and grass combine for an earthy, impressive aroma.

Taste

Huh. All that good stuff in the nose is gone. Instead, we have a fairly one-dimensional profile with healthy catty nature, leafy hops and grapefruit. The mouthfeel is a bit on the watery side, as well, and quite drying after the moderate-to-high hop bitterness has come and gone. There’s not much of an impression left behind in the finish.

Overall

Wrought Iron IPA ended up being a bit disappointing — especially after that tease of an aroma. It’s just not there in terms of flavor or body. Ah well, maybe next time. Or, maybe, I’ll just stick with their Bourbon Street Stout.
