O’Connor Brewing Haulin’ Oats

I love the name of this 7% ABV oatmeal stout — it stood out on the shelves and, like most label artwork, immediately drew me to O’Connor’s Haulin’ Oats. It’s fun, memorable and hints at this beer’s attitude wonderfully. Part of the company’s Steel Battalion series, this big stout doesn’t drink nearly as big as it may appear in that 22 ounce bottle.

Haulin’ Oats is an excellent example of the style, combining a robust backbone with a velvety smooth mouthfeel. The brewery has kept everything balanced and approachable while light coffee notes, cocoa, grain and a soft hop bitterness come together effortlessly. A hint of cigar lingers gently while a moderate sweetness keeps that robustness in check nicely.

As the weather gets colder, stouts and porters are the go to styles that fill my glass more often than not. O’Connor’s Haulin’ Oats provides a lightly warming drinking experience while also creating a wonderful array of flavors and balance. The only problem now, is which Hall & Oates song to choose while enjoying the next bottle.
