Starr Hill Orange Double Bass

Second up from Starr Hill’s Box of Chocolates Winter variety pack is the Double Bass with Orange. As you may have already guessed, this beer is their Double Bass stout with orange. I’m not sure how much of the fruit or if a specific variety was used in the brewing of this variant, but I can tell you that it’s tasty and fun.

While the Toasted Coconut version of this beer was darn smooth and cohesive, I feel the orange variety could use a bit more work to match my personal tastes a bit more. The body and mouthfeel are spot on, but the orange feels a bit too dominate in the flavor profile. I rarely say this for stouts, but I almost wish there was a bit more sweetness in the mix to really send this one into overdrive – and well into the dessert realm.

Orange Double Bass is not a bad beer by any means. It’s a fun beer that is a nice change of pace from your standard chocolate stouts and certainly adds to the uniqueness of this variety pack from Starr Hill. I, personally, would love to see it with a slightly toned down citrus presence and perhaps a touch more sweet cocoa notes. All in all, it serves its purpose wonderfully.
