Weyerbacher Heresy

Weyerbacher Heresy

Weyerbacher’s Heresy is a beer that has been on my wish list for quite some time. I finally found a bottle of it back in August and I’m surprised it’s lasted this long in the basement.

Heresy is an oak aged version of one of my favorite stouts, Weyerbacher’s Old Heathen. I thoroughly enjoyed this brew, but found it a bit thinner than Old Heathen — something I’ve noticed about a few of the barrel aged stouts I’ve had recently.

Appearance

Heresy pours black with a dark brown head that faded almost instantly.

Aroma

Much like Old Heathen, this one has a rich, boozy smell with a woodiness and espresso/roasted coffee notes. There’s a nice unsweetened chocolate and a subtle anise presence.

Taste

First thing’s first. Heresy is thinner than it’s little brother. I don’t know if it’s the barrel aging that does this, but it’s something that I’ve noticed with a few of the recent barrel aged beers I’ve had. That aside, the brew a nice roasted malt and coffee profile with a slight anise accompaniment. The finish is quite warming and has most of the oaky flavor.

Overall

I was expecting a bit more from this one. I love Old Heathen so my expectations were high — perhaps too high. It’s a flavorful brew that packs a decent punch. Maybe a little more time in the cellar would do it some good.
