Southern Tier Hoppe

Man, I really dig the stuff Southern Tier keep putting out. I can’t recall not liking anything that I’ve tried from them. And Hoppe, an Imperial IPA, is another notch on their belt of exemplary products. Described as an “…exercise in minimalism,” Hoppe is a beautifully crafted, flavorful brew that I need to buy more of.

Appearance

Hoppe pours a pale gold in color with a billowy white head that faded to excellent lacing on the glass.

Aroma

For something so “minimal” it’s got a surprisingly big nose. Lots of citrus hops and a good helping of bready malts combine for a well balanced brew. There’s a little something herbal in the mix as well — perhaps mint — but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Taste

Man, this is a super smooth brew. It’s got a slightly lower than expected carbonation that allows the bready malts to come forward a bit more and the hops behave more as a compliment to the malt than dominating it like many Imperial IPAs. Now, that’s not to say it doesn’t have a strong hop presence, it does have a good citrus character that balances nicely to the sweeter malts. The herbal notes are in the mix as well and add a nice additional note to the palate. There’s a late bite from the hops in the lingering finish.

Overall

This brew is yummy. I know I say this often, but this is one of those beers that I could drink all day long. It’s got a great flavor and is desceptively drinkable despite the 8% ABV.
