Fox Barrel Pear Cider

Fox Barrel Pear Cider photoWhat do you serve a cider in?

I haven’t consumed any sort of cider-like beverage (of the adult variety) since my college days. It was probably a Woodchuck that I promptly put down in exchange for another Pete’s Wicked. Needless to say I wasn’t a fan then, but I’m always open to new things. The rise of craft ciders has piqued my interest, but with the purchase of this Fox Barrel Pear Cider and a Crispin Cider to be reviewed later, I’m not sure I can jump on this bandwagon just yet.

Appearance

Pale yellow in color with no head, the Fox Barrel had a minimal amount of bubble activity rising from the bottom of the glass.

Aroma

There’s the obvious pear aroma that’s wrapped around a dry, champagne-like character and a touch of sweetness.

Taste

Lots of pear and sticky sweetness dominate this beverage as the delicate, effervescent carbonation tickles the tongue. There’s not much else to this beer that I can pick up. It’s a bit on the sweet side for my personal liking, but I did find it’s dry finish relatively refreshing.

Overall

All in all, this Pear Cider from Fox Barrel isn’t half bad, but I’m not sure that it was the right cider to start off with as I re-introduce myself to the style. My wife loved it, but then again, she’s got a sweet tooth when it comes to wines and things of this nature. Perhaps the Crispin does a better job.
