Opperbacco 10 e Lode

Honestly, the only reason that I purchased this bottle of 10 e Lode from Italy’s Microbirrificio Opperbacco was because of the unique bottle — the cleanly designed label didn’t hurt either. I had no idea what type of beer it was or even who actually crafted the brew inside until I got the bottle home and did some cursory research.

This 10% ABV Belgian Strong Dark Ale is pretty much unlike any other beer of this style that I’ve had. It’s a rich and decadent brew that comes across as part porter, part barleywine and Belgian ale. This particular bottle also had a distinctive smell of age to it as though it had already been sitting around for a while, but I didn’t see any particular markings on the bottle that would give any indication as to how old it really was. Regardless of it’s age, this brew was full flavored, unique and a joy to drink.

Appearance

10 e Lode pours a murky, cola brown with a thin collar around the edge of the glass.

Aroma

As stated above, there’s an aroma of age to this beer. Dark fruit, a moderate sweetness, caramel and booze also play a part in the inviting nose. A hint of coffee and half smoked cigar are also present, though faint.

Taste

For a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, I get little to no tell-tale yeast character on the tongue. It’s very much unlike any other Belgian ale I’ve had. It’s got a slight roast and coffee character of a porter, but with the sweetness and dark fruit (raisin) presence of a rich Belgian Ale. Hints of cocoa and a touch of hop bitterness also make an appearance. The finish is boozy and warms the chest. The soft carbonation and medium body give the beer a slightly viscous mouthfeel.

Overall

I’m pretty sure that this was my first beer from this Italian brewery. Though I wouldn’t consider this a traditional take on a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, it was still without a doubt tasty as hell. Deep in flavor and rich, the brew was perfect for sipping after dinner and made for a thoroughly relaxing evening. I will be sure to keep my eye out for this again in the future.
