Speakeasy Scarface

Scarface photo

It’s been a good long while since I last had a beer from California’s Speakeasy Ales. I think it was a Prohibition Ale during the Summer of last year. That’s no good. At least, I’m reintroducing myself to the company with a bang.

Scarface is a 9.5% ABV imperial stout that, in my unstable mind, was definitely the right way to get back into enjoying this brewery’s products. I mean, what else besides a rich, roasted malt based stout would be ideal for an unusually warm March afternoon. Nothing.

Appearance

Scarface pours black with a light mocha head that fell to a thin ring.

Aroma

The beer doesn’t have an overly strong aroma, but you do pick up solid hints of dark roast coffee, subtle chocolates and a touch of spicy hops.

Taste

Now this is a solid stout. A touch of anise joins the dark malt, roast coffee and chocolate to give the brew a little something extra. The late forming hop bitterness in the relatively dry finish is of a low level and arrives smoothly with a touch of alcohol warmth. The full mouthfeel and light carbonation give this beer an ideal stout feel on the palate.

Overall

Scarface is a wonderfully crafted imperial stout. It’s not over the top in terms of robustness or alcohol, but instead rests comfortably in a fairly approachable flavor profile for the style. Good roast and coffee character with a great fullness. Will be buying more.
