Palmetto Espresso Porter

Amongst my neighbors (well the close grouping of houses around my own), it’s no secret that I like a good beer. So whenever one of them asks my wife or I to watch their home while they are away on vacation, I’m usually rewarded with a six pack of tasty brews. One neighbor in particular makes it a point to get me beer that is local to wherever they may be visiting. This Palmetto Espresso Porter is from one such visit.

Brewed by Palmetto Brewing Company out of South Carolina, the beer features coffee from Charleston Coffee Roasters. The result is a full flavored and roasty porter with more than enough earthy, coffee character. And at 5.8% ABV, it won’t do too much damage if you decide to replace your usual cup of joe with a bottle of Palmetto Espresso Porter on a Sunday morning.

Appearance

A thin layer of light tan foam disappears quickly to a sparse surface cover above the dark brown beer.

Aroma

Dark roast coffee, earth, a touch of sweetness and a little chocolate all come together for a solid nose.

Taste

The flavors are right in line with the aroma. Dark malt, coffee, tobacco and a light cocoa presence form an earthy, robust character. There’s a bit of a sweetness that forms late and lingers softly with a light amount of hop bitterness in the semi-dry finish. The beer has an interesting coffee character with a solid roast and a touch of smokiness. It’s a bit sharp carbonation wise.

Overall

This is a decent brew. It’s got a good robust character with a unique coffee flavor. It’s not the best porter I’ve had, but it is darn drinkable. I just recently received several more Palmetto beers from the same neighbor. I can’t wait to check them out over the next couple of days.
