Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel Route Des Epices

I’ve had a few beers from Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel in recent years and each one brings a unique character and interpretation of a style. Some work, some don’t, but they are always interesting in their own right. The brewery’s riff on a rye ale, Route Des Épices, is a more traditional approach than some of their past exploits which works quite well here.

A spicy rye character leads the way as distant spice notes and malt lend a light cigar-like quality to this peppery beer. It’s an interesting beer with lots going on within it’s murky depths.

Appearance

Route Des Épices pours a dark chestnut in color with a large, fluffy cap of resilient, khaki foam.

Aroma

A ton of rye fills the nose as tobacco notes, pepper, caramel and distant spices arrive to round out an interesting aroma.

Taste

I’ve had some mild, spicy cigars in past years that would mimic this beer’s earthy flavor almost to a tee. The spicy rye, peppery character, light roast and soft malt fill the mouth as this full bodied brew slides along smoothly. Hints of caramel and grassy hops linger gently in the lasting finish.

Overall

Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel always seem to challenge guidelines and styles without becoming outlandish. Route Des Épices is just another example from this brewery of that trend. It’s different, tasty and unique.
