O’Connor Brewing Heavy Footer Double IPA

There’s not a ton of information available for this double IPA from O’Connor brewing except that it’s been dry-hopped four times with a blend that involves Citra and Galaxy varieties. Beyond that, all I can speak to is that which I encountered upon cracking open Heavy Footer Double IPA. And that, my friends, is a darn good brew.

As big as this beer is — 9% ABV and 86 IBU — it’s got a solid amount of malty balance in the mix. Aside from missing out on a bit more crispness in the mouthfeel, the blend of fruity hops, moderate bitterness and bready malt makes for a pleasant drinking experience.

Appearance

The brew pours a golden amber in color with a dense, frothy cap of off-white foam.

Aroma

Pine, tangerine, soft grapefruit, light bread notes and a hint of caramel come together cleanly.

Taste

More tangerine, a touch of mango, grapefruit and distant pine wash smoothly over the tongue. There’s not much of a hop bite in terms of the 86 IBU, but pleasantly tingles the palate. Moderate bready malt arrives midway to bring everything full circle. The beer is appropriately warming for the style. I’d like a bit more crispness no the tongue, but that’s not a show stopper.

Overall

All in all, Heavy Footer Double IPA is a solid example of the style. I love the earthy hop traits, but it’s the malty balance that steals the show here — making the beer dangerously drinkable. The smooth fruit and medium bitterness add a little something extra to the experience. I’ll definitely be on the look out for this one again.
