Pen Druid Brewing Mystic Lamb

Early this past November, the wife and I paid a visit to Sperryville’s Pen Druid Brewing. Not only was it nice to finally visit, but we had a good time chatting up the owners of one of the more exciting breweries in Virginia — hell, just check out the cover of the January 2016 issue of Beeradvocate magazine. We thoroughly enjoyed all that we sampled and ended up taking home a growler of the company’s Mystic Lamb.

This French saison is a treat of a beer. Weighing in at 4.9% ABV, Mystic Lamb carries a rustic overall character that I particularly like in the style. It’s got a touch of banana in its slightly hazy depths that I’m not particularly a fan of, but it’s at a minimal level and only helps accentuate the earthy funk that is also present. Needless to say, the growler didn’t last too long.

Our visit to Pen Druid was great and Mystic Lamb (the first of many growler fills to come) is an excellent beer. It’s refreshing, earthy and is right in line with what I personally enjoy in the style. My only complaint is that I didn’t bring more growlers along on our visit — there were many lovely brews ready for enjoyment.
