Highland Brewing Mosaic Rye IPL

I’ve had a few IPLs (India Pale Lager) in recent years. As with any style of beer, I’ve had some good ones and some not-so-good ones. Some have leaned, perhaps, too heavily on the hops while others have kept them too far in the periphery. Highland Brewing, with their Mosaic Rye IPL, have got a nice balance among all elements of this tasty brew.

This 8% ABV (75 IBU) India Pale Lager is brewed with a malt bill consisting of Two Row, C-40, and Riverbend Rye – the rye adds a great little kick of spiciness to the affair – as well as Mosaic and Ella hop varieties. The result is a beer that is as fragrant as all get out with tangerine, rye and pepper, but with a flavor that doesn’t lean too heavily on those hops. Sure there’s a pretty dank pine resin trait in the mix, but Mosaic Rye IPL also allows the lager portion of the beer to speak its mind comfortably.

When all is said and done, this latest offering in Highland’s Warrior Series is nicely balanced with just the right kick of peppery spice to keep things from becoming boring. It’s also a beer that disguises itself well as the alcohol content will creep up on you if you’re not prepared.
