Otter Creek Couch Surfer

Wow — It’s been eight years since I last posted any sort of review of anything from Otter Creek Brewing. The company’s Stovepipe Porter (no longer brewed) was one that frequently showed up in my fridge back in the day so I suppose it’s only fitting that I revisit the company with another dark brew. Couch Surfer is also part of Otter Creek’s year round offering which means I have no excuse not to pick it up again in the future.

At 5.4% ABV (32 IBU), Couch Surfer is a solid oatmeal stout that brings plenty of roasty espresso notes and a smooth mouthfeel thanks to the presence of oats in the malt bill. It’s a full flavored brew with a twinge of robustness and smooth earthy traits that work well with one another. It’s not a beer that is going to change your world, but it’s well-balanced, straightforward nature is refreshing in a sea of barrel- and sour-influenced products.

Couch Surfer is as tasty an oatmeal stout as you’re going to find in the market. It’s an unassuming example of the style that shines in its non-nonsense presentation. Smooth and balanced, the beer is ideal for lounging on the couch binge watching your favorite shows.
