Avery Brewing The Kaiser

I’ve been enjoying a nice stretch of pumpkin ales lately, but I think it’s time to make a shift. Oktoberfest is nearly upon us, so what better way to start it off (a bit early) than with a big brew from Avery Brewing.

I’ve seen The Kaiser a couple of times on past shopping trips, but for some reason never really thought to pick it up. I suppose now that we’re nearing the season in which it should be enjoyed, its allure was too much to fight. That, and any excuse to pack the fridge full with Oktoberfest related beers. The Kaiser, however, is definitely the most potent, weighing in at 9.7% ABV.

Avery The Kaiser

Appearance

Avery’s product pours a light copper in color with a large fluffy head that faded pretty quickly.

Aroma

Malty, sweet and boozy. This thing smells amazing. There’s a light apple scent in the mix along with subtle spices.

Taste

Served at just above cellar temperature, this one is a mighty Marzen. It’s full bodied, boozy and rich. It’s a good thing I was taking it easy the evening I enjoyed this one — it turned out to be more of a sipper than I expected. The finish lingers with a smooth sweetness.

Overall

The Kaiser certainly isn’t your run of the mill Oktoberfest. It’s not necessarily the best, but its flavors are amped up in every aspect. I might have to pick some more of this one up for the cooler evenings to come.
