Terrapin Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout

Terrapin Moo Hoo

I just recently purchased this bottle of Terrapin Brewing’s milk stout, Moo-Hoo. Had I paid more attention to the bottle and noticed the 2010 bottling date on it, I probably wouldn’t have bought it. Even as I was about to crack open this 6% ABV brew, I had serious trepidations. I mean, I’ve only ever had fresh versions of this style. I couldn’t imagine how aging would affect the lactose used to make it.

Fortunately, the beer held up just fine to the couple of years since it had been brewed — I didn’t notice any off-putting flavors. The full bodied brew had plenty of chocolate and sweetness to make this an adult chocolate milk.

Appearance

Moo Hoo pours black with a dense, dark brown head.

Aroma

It certainly smells like chocolate milk with loads of rich cocoa, lactose sweetness and a subtle roast.

Taste

There light roast from the nose didn’t translate to the flavor profile. So that means that all we are left with is the chocolate and milk. It’s not overly the top sweet, but if you’re in the mood for a richly flavored chocolate milk with a little bit of alcohol then this is the beer for you. The mouthfeel is super smooth and thick.

Overall

I’m glad that my fears over its age were unfounded, but this is still one of those beers that I would need to be in just the right mood to fully enjoy. It’s tasty, rich and chocolately, but I’m not sure that I would be able to consume more than one at any single sitting.
