De Halve Maan Brugse Zot

I’m fairly certain that I’ve had De Hale Maan’s Brugse Zot at some point in my drinking escapades, but it’s been quite some time. Perhaps the reason for the absence has been that just haven’t seen it around lately. Perhaps the jovial fool on the label went on vacation for a bit, but is now back to entertain. Regardless of the reason, it only took a few sips to realize what I had been missing.

Brugse Zot is a 6% ABV Belgian Pale Ale that drinks more like a pilsner, but with herbal yeast notes. It’s got a lighter character and drinkability that just screams refreshment, especially on a warm late Summer afternoon like the day that I reintroduced myself to the brew.

Appearance

The beer pours golden in color with a massive, rocky stack of off-white foam.

Aroma

Grain, crackers, light fruit and a subtle yeast character make for a subdued, yet inviting nose.

Taste

The flavor profile is right in line with the aroma — biscuity malt, light fruits and Belgian yeast. A subtle herbal character is in the mix as well as a touch of a peppery component. The beer is quite refreshing with a crisp, clean finish and a light body.

Overall

This isn’t the best Belgian ale out there, but man, is it every refreshing. It’s lighter body and bright malt character make it somewhat Pilsner-ish in nature. It suited the afternoon perfectly and I will not be going nearly as long between bottles as I have in the past.
