Green Flash Palate Wrecker

I’ve often used any variation of the words “palate” and “wrecker” in many reviews on this site, typically when describing the affect of a big, hoppy IPA. Well, now I’ve had the opportunity to try the beer that pretty much coined the phrase.

Originally brewed as a celebratory release for the second anniversary of the newly launched Hamilton’s Tavern in California, Palate Wrecker is just that, a wrecker of palates — and tastebuds. Now, in saying that, I can also say it’s not the most aggressive IPA that I’ve ever had. I’d still give the nod to Rogue’s Brutal Bitter in that regard.

As it stands, Green Flash Brewing’s Palate Wrecker is one big Imperial IPA. It’s got a massive amount of hopped up mayhem to delight even the snobbiest of hop fiends. It’s a beer that is packed with plenty of bitterness and pine resin, but is still tame enough to remain fairly drinkable, though I’m not sure my tongue would be able to handle more than one or two of these in a sitting.

Appearance

This 9.5% ABV brew pours golden amber in color with a slowly dropping stack of white foam. There’s some decent lacing left on the inner walls of the glass.

Aroma

Hmmm… I think a detect a hint of hops. In all seriousness, this things is packed with resinous pine, grass, grapefruit and hints of pineapple.

Taste

Hoppy, slick and hot. This is not a beer for the feint of heart or the passing pale ale fan. It’s full of biting hop character that grips the tongue late in the dry finish and holds on for a good long while. Pine, grapefruit, orange and citrus rind are all in the mix as the slick mouthfeel flows smoothly over the tongue. It’s got a light bit of malt sweetness and a very warming finish.

Overall

This beer is more than appropriately named. I love hopped up beer, but I’m not sure I’d be able to drink this one too regularly. It was fun to try and I’m sure given the chance, I’ll grab another bottle again at some point in the future, but I’d like to keep my taste buds intact in order to enjoy some tasty Saisons as the Spring weather warms.
