Magic Hat Ticket to Rye

I’m not usually a fan of rye bread in general (unless it’s in a really good ruben), but for some damned reason I really, really, really like it’s use in a tasty brew — especially in combination with a well-hopped IPA. Looking through this site and my notes, I don’t believe I’ve come across a rye-based IPA that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. Sure, the levels of rye vary from balanced to dominant, but in all instances I just can’t seem to get enough of these types of beers.

Magic Hat has their own take on the rye IPA in the 7.1% ABV (and 80 IBU) Ticket to Rye. And, it’s another one that I will gladly add to my list of favorites. The brewery’s version of this style lies in common with those that balance the hop character with the spiciness of the rye. This beer just drinks quite well and is refreshing as all get out.

Appearance

A large stack of frothy, light tan foam rests atop the copper colored brew. As the head fades, it leaves behind decent lacing.

Aroma

The nose on this beer is nicely balanced between piny notes, citrus, spicy rye, grains and caramel.

Taste

A nice helping of spicy rye, grain and caramel arrive immediately as herbal, citrusy and piny hops join in nearly as quickly. The hop profile (courtesy Nugget and Apollo varieties) brings a solid helping bitterness to the table that balances on the line between assertive and aggressive — leaning more toward a more acceptable level of bite. A touch of wheat also makes an appearance. Despite the hop bite, there’s also a nice bit of malt sweetness in the mix to help balance it all out. At the higher level of alcohol this beer is dangerously drinkable.

Overall

It’s hard for me not to like a rye IPA, but I will take note as to whether the rye component is too strong or too weak. In the case of Magic Hat’s Ticket to Rye, it’s just right. This is a wonderfully balanced beer that is refreshing and just flat-out tasty. I will most certainly be on the look out for this in the next couple of weeks.
