Mother Earth Brewing Sisters of the Moon

This bottle of Mother Earth Brewing Sisters of the Moon IPA came by way of the same “thank you” package as many of the recent reviews (and some more to come) on the site. The brew uses solely American-grown hops, though it’s not clear which varieties. What is clear is that this is a pretty darn tasty brew.

Sisters of the Moon certainly has the hop profile that you want in a beer of this nature, but it’s also got a welcome natural earthiness. It’s not the best IPA by any means, but it does refresh nicely and even at 6.9% ABV goes down dangerously smooth.

Appearance

Orangish amber in color, the beer sits with a dense, frothy cap of white foam.

Aroma

Orange, grapefruit, pineapple, peppery spice and a light piney presence fill the nose with all sorts of expectations.

Taste

While the aroma of Sisters of the Moon leans more heavily on the fruitier side of what hops can bring to an IPA, the flavor is decidedly more pine oriented. There’s still a good bit of grapefruit and orange, but the resiny pine comes through a good deal more. The beer has an earthy quality as it brings in a late forming hop bitterness that becomes more assertive the longer it lingers. It’s also quite drying on the backend after a soft malt sweetness has had time to fade.

Overall

Sisters of the Moon is a tasty brew. I enjoyed the earthy character and the hop bite wasn’t overpowering, but instead sat at a moderate-to-high level that was appropriate for the flavors. I can see several of these disappearing from shelves the next time I head on down to North Carolina — or perhaps am rewarded for another good job house sitting.
