New Belgium French Aramis IPA

This bottle of New Belgium’s French Aramis IPA accomplished two things for me. For one, it is the first brew I’ve had from the company’s Hop Kitchen line of beers — a series of releases that is filled with only the “boldest and hoppiest” of beers. Secondly, I do believe that it’s also the first time I’ve had a beer made with this particular hop variety (it also uses Bravo and Czech Saaz). Two birds with one beer I suppose.

At any rate, French Aramis IPA is certainly a bold beer. It’s completely unlike any other IPA that I’ve ever had. The flavors of this beer aren’t overly dominating or brutally bitter in that regard, but the flowery, herbal character that it brings to the palate is certainly on the bold side, especially considering the fanaticism that we have toward this style of beer.

Appearance

Golden in color with a large, frothy head of white foam.

Aroma

French Aramis IPA brings lemony citrus, a peppery presence, grass and a good bit of herbal notes to the nose. It’s quite flowery.

Taste

This beer has such a unique character that I was initially taken aback by it. there’s such a strong flowery quality to it that it took my brain a few minutes to figure it all out. Lemony citrus, grass and a late forming herbal component combine for an easy drinking IPA. There’s a moderate amount of sweetness that proves to amplify the floral and fruity aspects of the flavor as light, bready malts linger in the background. The beer has a smooth body and semi-drying finish.

Overall

Frensh Aramis IPA is one of the more uniquely flavored IPAs that I’ve ever encountered. It’s floral character and refreshing nature make it a beer that’s ideal for a warm sunny day, but I’m not sure that I would be able to make it through a second bomber of the brew. I’d need something as a change of pace as the flowery characteristics did wear on me a touch.
