Three Heads Brewing The Kind IPA

It was a year ago this past April that I first encountered Three Heads Brewing. I had purchased a bottle of their Java Sutra and a bottle of their The Kind IPA. I obviously took notes on the porter but neglected, at the time, to do so for the IPA. Well, it may have taken me over a year to do it, but I’ve finally gotten around to revisiting this 6.8% ABV and 76 IBU brew.

I don’t know much about this particular IPA in terms of what goes into it, but I can tell you that it’s a pretty solid brew. The Kind IPA carries a good amount of piney resin and a solid burst of bitterness that seems to be the focus here. It’s sort of one dimensional in that regard, but still a tasty brew that I’m sure most hop fans can appreciate.

Appearance

The Kind IPA pours a golden amber in color with a frothy crown of foam that left behind a good amount of lacing as it fell.

Aroma

A large amount of pine resin and juicy citrus fill the nose as light caramel and grains settle in the background. It smells quite good.

Taste

A small amount of caramel malt and grain arrives first, but is immediately enveloped by a solid blast of hop bitterness. Behind the bite is the resin and hints of grapefruit and lemon that arrive smoothly, but fade quickly before the drying, lasting finish arrives. The beer has got a fairly high level of hop bitterness but without much to balance it out. The crisp mouthfeel accentuates the bite.

Overall

The Kind IPA has a wonderful aroma, but unfortunately not much to back it up once the beer hits your tongue. It’s not a bad IPA by any means, but certainly lacks balance. If all you’re looking for a is a good punch to the palate with some hop bitterness, however, this is certainly the beer for you. I personally prefer a bit more malt to even things out.
