Yards Brewing Cape of Good Hope

Each year, Yards Brewing releases Cape of Good Hope, a double IPA, in tribute to the brewers that may (or may not have) “…made stronger, hoppier ales to survive the epic sea voyages around the Cape of Good Hope from England to India.” And each year the brewery switches up the recipe. For 2013, Cape of Good Hope is brewed with 100% pilsner malt and a wonderfully hoppy blend of Columbus, Centennial, El Dorado, Calypso and Galaxy hop varieties.

Cape of Good Hope presents a unique character that I can only believe is a result of the pilsner malt usage and a thoroughly refreshing nature. For as big a beer as this is — it weighs in at 9% ABV — the beer still manages to refresh the spirit and deliver a great drinking experience.

Appearance

A dense and rocky cap of tawny foam sits atop the golden amber brew.

Aroma

Grapefruit, orange peel, subtle pine and lightly toasted bread fill the nose with an enticing and inviting scent.

Taste

As good as this beer smells, it tastes even better. There exists an excellent balance between citrusy, piney hops and the grainy, toasted malt that forms the backbone of the beer. A moderate hop bitterness fades slowly toward a lingering tingle and touch of malt sweetness in the fairly warming finish. As with most double IPAs I’ve encountered, Cape of Good Hope has a slightly viscous mouthfeel before ending in a semi-dry finish.

Overall

I really like this beer. The pilsner malt and hop combination give it one of the more unique and interesting flavor profiles of any double IPA that I’ve had in the past. I will most certainly be prepared to buy Cape of Good Hope in higher quantities next time around.
