Coronado Brewing Frog’s Breath

Coronado Brewing’s Frog’s Breath isn’t just the latest addition to their Crown Series of limited/seasonal beers. It’s also the result of a collaboration between the brewery and a couple of keen homebrewers — who also happen to be retired Navy “frogmen.” The beer is a 6.5% ABV IPA that is brewed with a mixture of spices, kaffir lime leaf, lemon and orange zest.

It’s clear to see why this beer has become a hit with the brewery’s regulars. A bright, citrusy flavor commands your attention as a smooth hop bitterness invigorates the senses. Frog’s Breath is a full flavored and refreshing IPA that not only packs in the hoppy goodness fans of the style will love, but also has enough balance to remain easy drinking.

Appearance

The beer pours a golden in color with a large, dense crown of white foam that showed good staying power and lacing.

Aroma

There’s definitely a solid earthy lime influence on this beer as grapefruit, orange and a distant, nondescript spice character all come together. The brew smells clean and inviting.

Taste

The spice blend settles into the background, allowing the lime leaves and smooth hop character to take the — ahem — lime light… Right. The earthy lime is joined by orange, grapefruit, a hint of lemon and light pine. A low to moderate hop bitterness tingles the palate playfully as the brew exits cleanly. The citrusy character certainly adds to the beer’s refreshing demeanor.

Overall

I liked this beer a good deal. The addition of the zest and lime leaves give the beer a definitely citrus fruitiness. However, it’s equally countered by a good amount of hop bitterness, as well. As a result, Frog’s Breath comes across nicely balanced and an ideal flavor profile for a warm Spring afternoon.
