Mother Earth Brewing Dark Cloud

Dark Cloud from Mother Earth Brewing is a 5.1% ABV dunkel that I picked up on a Summer trip to the Outer Banks with family. At the time I took these notes back in July, I picked this brew up as a change of pace. It was nice to have a beer that is rick and malt driven to temper the tide of IPAs.

Now that the weather has turned much cooler and, at the moment, rainy, a beer like this would be ideal. Dark Cloud’s flavor is just about spot on for the style. It hasn’t been “Americanized” with an over abundance of hop bitterness or any other adjunct — it’s just a nicely crafted dunkel.

Appearance

Dark Cloud pours chestnut in color with a dark garnet edge and a light mocha head.

Aroma

Grain, a solid roast, burnt caramel and bread fill the nose smoothly.

Taste

The brew is bready, rich and carries an excellent bit of a roast that lingers for a good long while in the slightly sweet finish. It’s not overly malty as the medium bodied beer carries its clean flavors over the tongue.

Overall

There’s not much to say about a beer like this except that it’s been some time since I’ve had a good representation of a dunkel as tasty as Dark Cloud. I just wish I had purchased more back in July to seal away until now.
