Victory Brewing Moving Parts 02

Back in July of this year, Victory Brewing released the debut offering in their Moving Parts series of beers. The first round of Moving Parts (Batch 01) used a variety of American, English and Czech hops to create a well rounded and universally flavored IPA. With Batch 02, the brewery has decided to create an English-style IPA.

Victory used all-English hops and English yeasts in the creation of this second release. The result is another well-rounded beer, but also one that has less fruit character and an interesting, herbal tea-like quality. The effect makes for an earthy, leafy and fully drinkable brew despite its 6.4% ABV.

Appearance

Batch 02 pours a dull amber in color with a relatively short-lived cap of foam.

Aroma

Biscuity malt, light herbal notes and grassy, leafy hops fill the nose smoothly as hints of cracker and tea linger gently in the background.

Taste

The brew certainly has an English IPA character as a stronger malt presence and an earthy, grassy hop flavor dominate. Hints of grapefruit are fleeting and the level of bitterness is of a moderate level. The tea-like qualities persist throughout as a touch of malt sweetness tails off late in the lingering finish.

Overall

I really like the earthy, herbal hop character and biscuity malt as they balance one another out well. The green tea notes give the brew a refreshing quality and make for an easy drinking nature. Either of the Moving Parts releases would suit me fine on a warm afternoon.
