Old Ox Brewing Golden Ox

Ever since getting a hold of a couple of bottles of Old Ox products — Passion and Temper — I’ve been awaiting the day that the brewery’s products would be more readily available down in my neck of the woods. Well, as fate would have it, the local Safeway is now carrying both the Golden Ox and Alpha Ox (review for that tasty treat coming later). And I couldn’t be happier.

Golden Ox is a 6.5% ABV Belgian-style golden ale that may not be super authentic, but man, does it go down easy. With a balanced presentation of grain, hop and yeast, the beer refreshes nicely and just makes you want to crack open another can when the last has been drained.

Appearance

The beer pours a golden amber in color with a dense cap of off-white foam.

Aroma

Soft yeast, distant fruits, light grain and a touch of grassy, piney hops mingle gently on the nose.

Taste

An earthy start with a light sweetness arrives smoothly before ending with a soft hop tingle. A decent bit of yeast, grain, distant fruit notes and a lingering warmth round out the beer. Golden Ox has lightly crisp mouthfeel and comes across well-balanced.

Overall

I really like Golden Ox, as evident by the many number of empty cans that have been filling up my recycling bin since first finding the beer back in June. The beer is ideal for a warm Summer afternoon, relaxing on the deck. It’s been great having these products available such a short distance from Barley Blog HQ — I can’t wait for more arrivals in the future.
