Victory Brewing Kuhl Kolsch

The Kölsch will always have a special place in my heart. As part of my wedding celebration (so many moons ago), my father-in-law brewed up a batch for friends and family. It was the perfect beer for such a warm May afternoon — and obviously part of a special day. As a result, I’m a bit hard on and biased when it comes to drinking/reviewing other examples of the style. Victory Brewing Kühl Kölsch isn’t going to top that memory any time soon, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t one tasty beer.

Kühl Kölsch weighs in at 4.9% ABV and is part of the company’s Summer seasonal variety pack. It’s also a beer that I’d certainly pick up any day of the week if I happen to see it in its own dedicated six packs. Crisp and refreshing, the beer is an excellent thirst quencher during these hotter months.

Appearance

The beer pours a clear, pale straw in color with a dense head of white foam.

Aroma

Caramel, biscuity malt, soft grain, light honey and herbal notes fill the nose with an intriguing array of scents.

Taste

Bready, biscuity malt meets caramel, earthy honey and cereal as the brew glides over the tongue. Distant fruit and an interesting herbal note arrive shortly after and persist to the clean finish. A soft to moderate hop bitterness is accentuated (or gives off, it’s hard to tell which) a peppery trait that tingles the palate. A moderate sweetness helps counter the bite.

Overall

Kühl Kölsch is a fun, lively beer that has plenty of flavor and a refreshing nature that I love in this style of beer. The herbal characteristic that it has helps set it apart from the crowd. I can dig it.
