Highland Brewing Thunderstruck Coffee Porter
Highland’s Thunderstruck Coffee Porter has been around for a few years now and, apparently, I’ve already enjoyed the brew a few times starting back in 2013 if Untappd is to be trusted. Why it never received a review on this site? You’ve got me, so let’s take care of that right now and tell you how much I liked this roasty, earthy and robust porter.
The brewery partnered with Dynamite Roasting Company to come up with a combination of two coffee blends that were added at two distinct points in the brewing process. A robust Mexican blend was added at the end of the boil while a lighter Honduran blend was added later. The result is a porter that is packed with a full coffee character, robust nature and long lasting earthy roast that mingles nicely with hints of cocoa and tobacco. Unlike some coffee-influenced beers, Thunderstruck doesn’t present any black coffee bitterness while still retaining its robust nature.
A beer like Highland’s seasonal coffee porter is ideal for the colder weather months to come. It’s earthy and loaded with coffee character — enough to keep you warm after a long day raking or shoveling snow. Thunderstruck is my kind of coffee porter.
