Evil Twin Turkish Delight

While Evil Twin’s Molotov Cocktail Simcoe satisfied a need for hops last month, it’s still cold out and a rich, malty brew is required during these shorter days. So what better way to nourish the soul than with the brewery’s Turkish Delight, a brown ale brewed with coffee and cardamom.

This 6% ABV brew definitely packs in the malt that I desired plus an earthy coffee and a cardamom presence that can only be described as potent. That said, the spice’s foremost impact is in the aroma as it’s level of involvement doesn’t quite translate to the flavor nearly as much — this is a good thing.

Appearance

The beer pours a dark cola brown in color with a patchy, beige surface cover.

Aroma

As stated above, the cardamom level is quite high here. It dominates the nose as rich malt, coffee, bread and a nutty character also present themselves.

Taste

I found the spice presence a bit too strong in the aroma, but thankfully it stays there for the most part, only leaking into the flavor late in the lingering finish. On the tongue we mostly find coffee, malt, caramel, a nuttiness and soft hop bitterness. This is an easy drinking beer with a moderate body and soft carbonation.

Overall

I’m glad the cardamom wasn’t quite as overwhelming on the palate as it was on the nose. It’s just a bit too much there for my personal liking. That said, Turkish Delight is a pretty darn tasty brew. I like the interplay of the rich malt and coffee and that nutty character was a welcome surprise, as well.
