Expedition Stout Out of Season

Able to leave the office a bit early today, I decided to take the slight detour and hit up Total Wine on the way home. The fridge was due for a restocking anyway, so it just all worked out nicely.

As I’m perusing the shelves with a couple of mixed six packs already in the cart I stop dead in my tracks at the “Seasonal” shelf. The feeling of utter disbelief in my eyes, I stare blankly at the pricing label for a six of Bell’s Expedition Stout. Apparently, I had been standing there long enough that one of the staff stopped by to see if I needed anything.

I’m pretty sure I stuttered slightly, pointing to the shelf in question. “Is this right?”

“Actually, yes it is. You’re the first to notice it.” He continued to go on to inform me that the price was dropped since the beer was now “out of season.”

Now, I had just purchased a six pack of this one last month for around $13.00 (give or take a couple of cents). So when I say that the price dropped, I mean it really dropped. Half expecting some hidden camera crew to come out of the shelving system behind me, I quickly claimed the last couple of six packs as my own — at $3.99 a pack. That’s right, three ninety nine.

I’m still a bit flabbergasted as I’ve never seen the price of a beer drop so dramatically so quickly. I’m not complaining by any means (I now have a well stocked cellar to play with), but I’ve never heard of any one dropping the price like that for a beer that is now past it’s seasonal release.

Has any one else experienced this phenomenon?
