Long Trail Brewing Double Bag
There two things I liked about this brew from Vermont’s Long Trail Brewing Company. First, it’s a darn tasty alt. Second, it reminded me to pick up several more bottles of their delicious Imperial Porter.
Back to this 7.2% ABV double alt (or “Stickebier” according to the brewery). This recipe won Malt Advocate’s Beer of the Year award in 2001 and I can see why. It’s a crisp, refreshing and full flavored brew with plenty of punch to keep you warm on a cold February evening.
It’s also a brew with just the right amount of sweetness. I’ve run into a few potent alts that have been a bit too cloying for my own personal liking, but Double Back hits the mark just right.
Appearance
The light khaki head fades slowly to a thin, patchy lace above a crystal clear dark amber brew. Looks tasty.
Aroma
Lightly toasted malts, caramel and a light sweetness combine well with a subtle fruity, earthy hop presence. There higher alcohol content makes an appearance as the beer comes to room temperature.
Taste
Like I said in the intro, it’s not nearly as sweet as some of the alts I’ve had in the past. The moderate sweetness carries with it a biscuity, caramel malt character that comes through predominantly up front before fading to a subtle hop component. The crisp mouthfeel gives this brew a refreshing quality. Despite the higher ABV, Double Bag is dangerously drinkable.
Overall
I liked this beer a good deal and am kicking myself for not picking up more than the couple of bottles I did. It’s a rich, full flavored alt that has just the right sweetness and balance for what I need on a cold Winter evening.
