Sweetwater Brewery Brings Back Waterkeeper Hefewiezen

Press Release

Sweetwater Waterkeeper Hefeweizen label

ATLANTA (May 21, 2012) – SweetWater Brewing Company today announced the return of its Waterkeeper® Hefeweizen to their Catch and Release seasonal lineup. The unfiltered wheat ale will be rolling out in limited release on draft at participating restaurants and retailers across the Southeast late this May.

Waterkeeper® Hefeweizen is cloudy golden in color, brewed with wheat and two-row barley malt, and Sterling and Hallertau hops. A refreshing brew for summer in the South, this Hefeweizen ale rings in at 5.7% ABV and underneath its fluffy white head it delivers banana and clove notes from the Bavarian Hefeweizen yeast with a hint of lemon.

“I bet folks don’t know this, but it takes a lot of water to brew our beers,” said Founder and Big Kahuna Freddy Bensch. “What better way to get the community involved in promoting clean water and conserving our coastlines than to take our mission to the next level, and dedicate a tasty brew to the cause.”

Waterkeeper® Hefeweizen made its debut in 2011 as a way for SweetWater to raise awareness and proceeds to benefit local Waterkeeper® Alliance organizations throughout the Southeast. The brewery will be making waves again this year as it kicks off campaigns Memorial Day weekend running through July 4.

Since the start of their efforts with Atlanta’s own Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper® nearly six years ago, SweetWater has raised more than $350,000 for the cause. With such success, they began work with Waterkeepers® across the Southeast including: Neuse Riverkeeper® Foundation and French Broad Riverkeeper® in North Carolina, Charleston Waterkeeper® in South Carolina, Black Warrior Riverkeeper® and Mobile Baykeeper® in Alabama, along with Apalachicola Riverkeeper® and St. Johns Riverkeeper® in Florida.

Raising the bar even higher, SweetWater will host their first-ever regional concert series this year featuring bluegrass band and headlining act Railroad Earth. The concert series will hit the road June 20-24, touring Raleigh, Charlotte, Charleston and Jacksonville with Waterkeeper® Hefeweizens flowing at each show.
