San Diego, CA – June 6, 2013– Karl Strauss Brewing Company won four medals at the highly competitive San Diego International Beer Competition this week, as well as a Gold Medallion from the California Restaurant Association, tying for “Best Brewery.” These impressive wins will propel the company into the busy summer season, where sales are expected to continue at double-digit pace. “Our beer sales were up 30% in May, and these wins just validate all of the hard work we’re doing,” says Paul Segura, Brewmaster, Karl Strauss Brewing Company. “We know there are a ton of great breweries in San Diego, so it’s nice to get wins like these when you know the bar is set so high.”

The San Diego International Beer Competition continues to gain national recognition as a premier beer event and this year there were 942 entries from across the globe. Karl Strauss won Gold for its 23rd Anniversary Old Ale, Silver for Off the Rails, and Bronze for its Red Trolley Ale and 25th Anniversary Preview Doppelbock. “We are stoked that our 25th Anniversary beer took a medal because that beer will continue to get better as it ages on oak until February,” says Segura. This also marks an incredible 14th medal win for Red Trolley Ale — the company’s bestseller—in the past five years.

In addition to being one of the most award-winning breweries at the San Diego International Beer Competition, Karl Strauss was awarded the California Restaurant Association’s Gold Medallion for “Best Brewery” in San Diego. “The Gold Medallion goes to the county’s best-of-the-best and we’re proud to be included on that short list,” says Segura. “We are looking forward to our tasting room opening this summer so people can experience our brewery and diverse line-up of beers firsthand.”
