Rising Tide Maine Island Trail Ale
Yesterday, I mentioned that I had gotten a few beers driven down from Maine while on a trip to the Outer Banks earlier this Summer. Today we visit a second beer from Rising Tide Brewing — the 4.3% ABV Maine Island Trail Ale. This brew, much like Virginia-based Hardywood’s Capital Trail, this American pale ale is brewed to benefit it’s name sake.
However, unlike Hardywood’s brew, there are a few things I’d like to see more of with Maine Island Trail Ale. First, the word “crisp” appears on the can’s artwork. The beer, in fact, has a rather soft mouthfeel that could certainly use a bit more sharpness on the tongue. With that, the brew is also a bit on the thin side — an issue I find to be typical of many low-alcohol brews as of late. That said, Maine Island Trail Ale still has plenty to offer in terms of a wonderful hop blend.
Appearance
A stack of white foam leaves sticky lacing in its wake as it drops atop the pale straw colored brew.
Aroma
Citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit), a touch of pineapple, grain, light grass and soft pine all combine for a welcoming nose.
Taste
The brew has a good hop character and easy-drinking nature. Pine, citrus and grass rest atop grain, light bread and crackers. As stated, the brew is a bit thin and soft, but the flavors are where it’s at. A moderate bitterness lingers in the lightly drying finish.
Overall
Maine Island Trail Ale is a tasty brew — don’t get me wrong there. I like it’s hop profile and easy drinking nature. I just wish it were a bit fuller on the palate. I think that the added oomph would make for a truly refreshing experience with a beer as cleanly tasting as this one.
