Sunken City Nachthexen

It’s no secret, for return readers, that I’m not a huge wheat-anything fan, but there is one style based on the grain that I actually thoroughly enjoy. The weizenbock is a variation of wheat beer that I love — Aventinus is one of my all time favorite brews. How does Sunken City’s Nachthexen stack up to home favorite. Well, it’s not quite at the level of Aventinus, but it is still pretty darn good.

At 7.8% ABV, the beer is on par in that regard with its contemporaries. Nachthexen is rich, malty and goes down deceptively well. It just lacks the refinement and, for lack of a better word, class of the premiere examples of the style. Did that stop me from draining the wax-sealed brew? Nope.

Appearance

Murky brown in color the beer sits with a dense, creamy cap of beige foam.

Aroma

Cocoa, grain, wheat, a soft char and bread combine for a rather subdued aroma.

Taste

From start to finish, Nachthexen is rich and malty with a touch chest-warming glow after each sip. Wheat, a soft roast, caramel, fig and a hint of cocoa combine as the light-to-medium bodied brew washes over the palate. A moderate sweetness linger gently before fading to the drying finish.

Overall

Nachthexen is a tasty brew in its own right. It’s just not going to supplant Aventinus for amy go-to brew when I’m looking for a dark, wheat-based brew. As stated in the intro, the beer just needs a bit of refinement and we’ll be good to go.
