Breckenridge Brewery King’s Dish

King’s Dish is the latest offering in Breckenridge Brewery’s Small Batch Series. It’s billed to be a Burton-style ale, but having never enjoyed anything in that style, I’d more describe this as a strong ale or old ale. It’s malty backbone and warming nature serve to re-enforce that impression.

The 7.8% ABV beer — its name derived from a line from Shakespear’s epic play, The Winter’s Tale — drinks a bit bigger than it is. Plenty of warmth in the lightly drying finish and a fairly robust character leave a lasting impression after each sip. Rich malt, caramel, a light nuttiness and a moderate hop bite combine for a pretty darn good drinking experience.

As the season for IPAs starts to creep in, a big, malty beer like King’s Dish is a welcome departure from stronger hop and citrus notes. It’s also a brew that I personally could enjoy just about any time of year.
