Blackberry Farm Classic Saison

Blackberry Farm Brewery has been brewing since 2011, selling their products to guests of the adjacent luxury hotel and local restaurants. In 2015, the brewery expanded and just this past June, their products started appearing on shelves in northern Virginia. The first offering from the Tennessee company that I’ve crossed paths with thus far is their Classic Saison and it makes a hell of a first impression.

Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical about the brewery and this 6.3% ABV saison. The whole thing, at first, sounded like just another expensive establishment tossing a brewery onto their property in an effort to jump on a trend and get more guests. The very first sip of Classic Saison, however, was more than enough to let me know that’s not the case at all. The rustic character this beer provides, as well as the array of funk, grain, grassy hops, yeast and earthy honey showcases knowledge, crafting expertise and a respect for the style being brewed. Classic Saison is balanced, measured, yet lively and full-flavored providing an experience that rivals many of the more well-known American-made examples of the style.

I’m pleased that Classic Saison did not live up (down?) to my initial thoughts of skepticism. I’ve enjoyed this brew a couple of times since this initial June review, as well as their Barrel Series Flanders, each time reveling in the experience. I’ll be on the lookout for more of their releases in future shopping trips.
