Maui Brewing Imperial Coconut Porter

I’m not a fan of coconut — it’s just a flavor that I’ve never fully enjoyed. That said, I absolutely love the nuttiness that toasted coconut provides, especially when utilized within a porter or stout. Maui Brewing already has their CoCoNut Porter (not sure if it’s called that anymore) and now I’ve snagged a bottle of their 2016 GABF gold medal winning Imperial Coconut Porter.

This big porter (9.4% ABV, 30 IBU) is packed with that toasted coconut nuttiness, a solid roastiness, smooth dark coffee, cocoa, anise and a good amount of sweetness. A viscous mouthfeel adds to the brews decadent character as it effortlessly glides over the tongue. Everything comes together cleanly with excellent balance before seamlessly transitioning to a long lasting and gently warming finish.

My love/hate relationship with coconut will never be resolved, but when it comes to a big stout or porter like Maui’s Imperial Coconut Porter I’m all for that toasted, nutty flavor it adds. I sipped on this brew for as long as I could the other night. I just didn’t want its rich, chocolatey flavors to fade too soon. I’ll be on the look out for more of this tasty porter.
