Flying Dog Kujo Coffee Porter

I was going to say that I haven’t crossed paths with Flying Dog Kujo in quite some time, but then it dawned on me that the last time I did have this beer, it was a stout. The 2020 version of Kujo is a porter. I’m not entirely sure when that occurred, but there you go.

This revised version of the beer weighs in at 6% ABV (15 IBU) and utilizes cold-brewed coffee from Vigilante Coffee, another Maryland-based company. The partnership sees the two entities coming together to make themselves a damn good porter.

This full-bodied brew is packed with dark coffee flavor without the associated bitterness. The profile is robust and smooth though not rich like the stout version of this beer. It’s almost rustic in a way with a good bit of char, earthiness and latent roughness at the edges. A hint of chocolate lingers after each swallow.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the previous incarnation of Flying Dog’s Kujo, I think I prefer this porter better. It’s not as rich, but I do like the robust and earthy nature that it presents. Its bite isn’t too ferocious, but ain’t no toy poodle either.

This is a review of a promotional sample received from the brewery.
