Foothills Brewing Torch Pilsner
This bottle of Foothills’ Torch Pilsner was part of a batch of brews that I brought home from the Outer Banks this past Summer. It’s a 5.3% ABV and 35 IBU Czech-style pilsner that delivers a solid, biscuity malt backbone. The brew doesn’t quite have that zing of noble hops that I like to find in examples of the style, but it certainly goes down easy.
Appearance
A tightly beaded head of white foam rests atop the straw colored brew.
Aroma
Grain, crackers, a soft malt sweetness, distant stone fruits and light grassy hops all fill the nose effortlessly.
Taste
The crackery malt character leads the way for this easy drinking beer as a hint of malt sweetness lingers gently. Torch Pilsner is softly carbonated with a pretty muted hop character. I personally would like a little more of a tease from the Saaz hops. The lack of bitterness and malt character make for an easy drinking brew.
Overall
All in all, Torch is a decent little brew. I’d prefer a bit more of a hop presence for my own personal liking not a hop bomb mind you, but a little spicy bight would be nice. Other than that, the beer goes down with little effort.
